Authors studied the changes of cerebral ventricular system, paraventricular area and cerebral cortex in an experimental hydrocephalus.
In this study, the sequential dilatation of ventricular system, and the alteration of paraventricular area and cerebral cortex were examined especially in regard of clinical manifestation and gross pathological findings on the 35 cats.
The hydrocepalus was induced by injection of Kaolin suspension into the cisterna magna.
The results of chronic hydrocephalus were compared in four. groups according to 3, 6, 9 and 12 weeks intervals respectively.
Clinically the animals were inactive and slight drowsy in a few weeks after intracisternal injection of Kaolin, and in later stage, the main features of animals were stooped posture and awkward movement.
The gross pathological changes of the ventricles, paraventricular area and-cerebral cortex were progressively advanced.
The characteristic alterations in induced hydrocephalus were the cobbled surface and remolding of the ventricles, mainly found after 6 weeks hydrocephalus.
Thinning of cortex and flattening of gyri, were gradually progressed, and the central canal of spinal cord was also dilated after 9 weeks of induced hydrocephalus.
